WHAT CONNECTS US?

I to you

one to another

we are connected by lines on a map:

the flight-paths of innumerable birds

each annually reaffirming

its three-dimensional map of the world

– a map whose principal features are

perching-places

drinking-places

feeding-places

meeting-places

nesting-places.

Highways, railroads, cities are of no significance.

Borders

watchtowers

guard-posts

barbed wire

immigration control:

these are meaningless.

The lie of the land

the angle of the sun

the mood of the sea

the cast of the wind

the set of the stars:

these are significant.

We are connected by a web

woven across the years

stitched across the sky

binding us together

one to another

I to you.

I think we are connected by our: desire to give, but our greed, our need to be accepted, but our speed to judge, our passion when loving, and the intensity of our hate.
