My location is Philadelphia, PA.

I think food connects us. The growing of food, the harvesting of food, and the preparing and eating of meals. Today, even blogging about food connects us (in fact, I've made several friends online because of our mutual love of food).

I sent my migratory book to a friend in California who is a fellow food lover. I have shared many meals at her table and it's part of what I value most about our friendship. Though we are 3,000 miles apart and we can't sit at the same table, we still share recipes and stories about food.

Thank you for this project, I appreciate this moment you've created for me to reflect and share part of what I feel connects people to one another.Erahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17191428609143608831noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4734920792189522022.post-54736921743645674282009-12-05T15:40:43.570-08:002009-12-05T15:40:43.570-08:00When I was studying in Beijing, I didn't make ...When I was studying in Beijing, I didn't make many strong connections with Chinese people.

In my six months in China, the best connection I made was during the last two weeks of my stay.

A young man named Jade Mountain, who was a student at the Hydroelectric University, reached out to me with honesty, enthusiasm, and touching sensitivity. We had long talks about our countries, and he even dared to criticize the Beijing government for its policy of colonialism in his home province of Xinjiang. I relished the rare opportunity to speak the truth about the dark side of hyper-capitalism in the US. It was 1997, and most mainstream Chinese were enraptured with "development", materialism, and everything that it stood for.

So, I believe we are all connected by the truth of our experience. No matter what the country or circumstance, we each have a truth that must be spoken to others.

Jade Mountain wrote and illustrated a poem that showed China and USA with eyeglasses, because we both wore them. The poem was about speaking from the heart.Rocinante Presshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14107355805135579497noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4734920792189522022.post-87273599799447684162008-09-02T07:40:00.000-07:002008-09-02T07:40:00.000-07:00Art connects us. And to answer your question "what connects us?" - I think it comes down to the human need to connect - everything seems to come down to that need - we LOVE to connect with others! I am sending the book on to my friend Susie in Albany - she lives over a 1000 kilometres away and I have to rely on the internet and art for most of my connection with her so I thought it fitting this little book travels to her next. We are driven by the desire to manifest our yearning for a place to be rather than merely to dwell. We stride out, prompted by visions of grand journeys and adventures, rather than dreams of safety and small pleasures. We depart from places that nurtured our bodies for a while to seek out people and places that might nurture our dreams. We answer a call to flock, like to like, spirit to spirit, with others of our wide-strewn tribes. Our souls are like drops of oil in an ocean of water. Our passages across time zones and uncharted spaces are our journey to the surface, where we may connect - again - to become what we are, rather than what we were told we might be in a world that was not truly ours.

Susan Letham, Germany

The book I was holding has now been released again and is travelling to Spain.Susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09059940425181684470noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4734920792189522022.post-64413433256019453902008-06-22T18:53:00.000-07:002008-06-22T18:53:00.000-07:00I think what connects us on a physical level are a...I think what connects us on a physical level are atoms, gases, liquids. We are today a product of where we've been and of the people, animals, plants, beings we've encountered. Our thoughts contain the thoughts of others to the point where their true origins are untraceable. But the connections that I find most matter right now are the relationships we build. Who we are everyday is so intricately tied to the relationships we encounter, build, and invest in. Ultimately, I think, relationships with other beings, fleeting or not, are the ultimate living experience.

Lucia Dura from El Paso, TexasLucha Librehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11810848717920776782noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4734920792189522022.post-41362836308364024642008-06-14T11:17:00.000-07:002008-06-14T11:17:00.000-07:00Sorry - Fforgot to sanswer the question: What conn...Sorry - Fforgot to sanswer the question: What connects US? - That is simple - it's LOVE!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07449809031669435374noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4734920792189522022.post-13297848489201736342008-06-14T11:16:00.000-07:002008-06-14T11:16:00.000-07:00Hi MIchelle - I received the migratory book on 4th...Hi MIchelle - I received the migratory book on 4th June just in time for my birthday which was on 5th. We run in polite circles, rarely able to have a conversation of true depth. We wonder if we really know even the person closest to us. I think that's why I love to read so much--I start to glimpse another person's mind, and am relieved to know I'm not the only person to ever think a certain way. That's why I also love languages. Somehow humankind has managed to create over 6,000 different ways of communicating verbally. I play word games, and find connections from language to language, as cultures crossed, adopted, influenced. A greater picture is formed, revealing our commonalities.MarieEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00255440089611626603noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4734920792189522022.post-21508338694746289272008-03-16T18:47:00.000-07:002008-03-16T18:47:00.000-07:00What connects us to each other? All of these questions come to my mind when I read the Migratory Book. Connections, something I always feel I have a lack of. Connections are most noticeable when you are trying to break them. Connections can be a very precious thing that we can take for granted. Connections are necessary for our survival. I feel that we as a species have tried so hard to sever our connection to nature in trying to overpower her. As a result we are making ourselves very unhealthy in every way.
